RAISING HEALTHY KIDS
Easy, inexpensive steps proven to insure trouble-free goat rearing.

Provide a clean area for the "blessed event." After the kids are born we "adopt" them. It helps to have someone to attend to Mom and someone else to care for the newborns. Give Mom a bucket of fesh water. Check to be sure all the afterbirth is expelled and dispose of it properly.

Prevent newborn "navel ill" by cutting the umbilical cord about 6 inches from the body, dipping completely in tincture of iodine (#19G) and clamping off with navel cord clamps (#2L-5).

Dry the kids with clean cloths, giving careful attention to the nose and mouth.

Administer a 10 cc SubQ injection of Goat Serum Concentrate (#3K) to provide the essential antibodies the babies must have to build a strong immune system (this can be done in two sites of 5 cc each). The serum is instantly absorbed and never leaves a lump.

Begin feeding either Mom's colostrum (heat-treated if necessary) or colostrum replacer (#3G). Half a package of colostrum replacer is plenty when you are doing the Goat Serum Concentrate injection. Start feeding milk or milk replacer after a day or two of colostrum. We feed all they can eat, twice a day.

When the kids are 3 days old give them a little bit of wormer (less than half the adult dose). This eliminates any chance of worm problems with the nursing kids.

Allow the kids to sample a little hay and grain occasionally and wean them when they are eating enough to start chewing their cud (around 3 months old).

For coccidiosis prevention, starting at 3 weeks old, feed 1/2 cc of DiMethox 40% injectable (#17D-1), often called "Albon," ORALLY in their bottle twice a day for one week. Then once a week until weaned.
